The Endpin holds the full weight and tension of the strings. It needs just the right amount of fit, too loose and the pin could pop out, too tight and the pin won’t go in properly with a risk of it snapping off due to diminished anchor resistance.
For Celli and Basses it is also the point of support to the ground for the spike.
